A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
but a fool's wrath is heavier than both of them. ( Proverbs 27:3)
As a wise judge, Solomon often had to deal with wrath and anger, strife and contention. These problems arise from folly, but they may be calmed and controlled by wisdom. Among other things, anger is aroused by backbiting. Anger stirs up trouble, produces strife, causes failure, and at times leads to death; yet it may be quieted by wisdom, turned aside by a soft answer, or pacified by a gift. Men of discretion learn to control their temper; this enables them to relieve contention. This is a much better tactic than using force to stop a fight.
Strife is often stirred up by sins such as hatred, wrath, whispering, contention, and pride; it is far worse than poverty. But strife may be stopped by terminating the tale-bearing, by excluding the scoffer, or by separating the scrappers, but not without difficulty and even danger.
Contention creates catastrophic conditions that are usually cased by foolish things such as pride, scoffing, or drunkenness, but it can sometimes be calmed by such a simple thing as drawing straws. Wise men are peacemakers and will choose loneliness rather than a life of contention.
