Receive my instruction, and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold (Proverbs 8:10).
Solomon knew the great value of instruction, reproof, and correction to those who receive them. He indicated that instruction is a source of knowledge and wisdom that is of lasting value. It is available from numerous sources, such as God's Word, parents, wisdom, teachers, counselors, and even from the failures of fools. The wise readily receive instruction, but fools reject it.
Reproof also is profitable; it provides such benefits as honor, knowledge, and understanding. The wise readily receive reproof, but fools refuse it, with dire consequences.
In addition, correction is profitable to the wise but a little value to fools. In case of continued disobedience, correction may require harshness; but obedience is the wisest response, because it provides such benefits as longevity, wisdom, and understanding. By contrast, disobedience often results in punishment, poverty, and even the ruination of prayers. Wise men welcome instruction, reproof, and correction, knowing that they bring blessings and benefits.
